In coordination with the Science Diplomatic Club, the Office of Science and Technology organizes monthly Science Breakfasts. These events, initially planned as a series of conferences, consist of inviting a prominent member of the American science and technology community to speak to an audience of counselors and attachés from embassies in Washington.
The first session, which took place in January of 2007, was well attended, with approximately 30 guests from over 15 different countries. Each of these breakfasts has been an occasion to strengthen ties with American leaders in science and technology and also to ask them questions and spur dialog within a favorable context. One very positive result, for example, was the visit to France in January, 2008, by Department of Homeland Security Under Secretary for Science Jay Cohen. He had spoken at the embassy in the fall of 2007, and his visit to France should lead to an agreement to strengthen cooperation in security-related R&D.
