INPI is a publicly-owned establishment, financially self-sufficient and placed under the supervision of the Ministry for the economy, finances and industry and the Ministry delegated to industry.

The main duties of the INPI are to grant patents for the protection of inventions, to register trademarks and to formulate the industrial property protection laws. The INPI?s role is also to promote an understanding of intellectual property protection and to support innovation and French companies? competitiveness. Within this framework, INPI keeps the national Trade and Companies Register (information on businesses) and provides various tools for technological and commercial surveys: libraries, CD-ROMs, databases and a web site.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 

 

 

Main activities

- Receive and examine applications to grant patents on inventions and register trademarks, designs and models

- Make and adapt the industrial property protection laws

- Play an active role in sensitizing to the stakes of intellectual property protection by disseminating patent and trademark information.

- Provide training to students in universities, business and engineering schools as well as to professionals in companies, research institutions and partner institutions for innovation.

- Publish and disseminate patent information, maintain and make available databases of French and foreign issued patents and records

- Reinforce the influence of France in the world of intellectual property

- Keep at the national level all the information collected by the commercial courts on the companies (registration numbers, changes, cancellations of registrations, legal instruments and annual accounts)

 

INPI Innovation Trophies

Organized every 2 years, the INPI Innovation Trophies have been created in 1991 to distinguish SMEs that consider industrial property matters as an essential element in the defining of their research, innovation and development policies. Since 2000, research institutions can also be awarded.
