French scientists elected to the National Academy of Sciences

The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) announced the election of 84 new members and 21 foreign associates from 15 countries in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Two French foreign associates were nominated this year: Denis Duboule and Philippe Sansonetti.

Denis Duboule is a professor at the Department of Genetics & Evolution (formerly the Department of Zoology and Animal Biology) at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. He holds both Swiss and French citizenship. More information on his current research in developmental genomics is available at http://genev.unige.ch/en/users/Denis-Duboule/unit.

Philippe Sansonetti is a professor at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, France. His research focuses on Shigella, Gram-negative bacteria that cause dysentery and the development of a vaccine against bacillary dysentery. Those elected to the NAS bring the total number of active members to 2,152 and the total number of foreign associates to 430. Foreign associates are nonvoting members of the Academy, with citizenship outside the United States. The NAS is a private, non-profit society of distinguished scholars engaged in scientific and engineering research, dedicated to the furtherance of science and technology and to their use for the public good. It was established in 1863 by an Act of Congress signed by President Abraham Lincoln at the height of the Civil War that calls upon the NAS to provide independent advice to the government on matters related to science and technology.

La National Academy of Sciences (NAS) a annoncé l'élection de 84 nouveaux membres et 21 correspondants étrangers de 15 pays en reconnaissance de leurs réalisations remarquables effectuées dans le cadre de leurs recherches originales. Deux correspondants français ont été élus cette année : Denis Duboule et Philippe Sansonetti.

Denis Duboule est professeur au Département de Génétique et Evolution (anciennement le Département de Zoologie et Biologie Animale) à l'Université de Genève en Suisse. AgreenSkills : un nouveau programme de mobilité internationale pour chercheurs

AgreenSkills est un programme de mobilité internationale vers ou depuis la France destiné aux jeunes chercheurs de toutes nationalités, dans les domaines de l'agriculture, l'environnement, l'alimentation et la nutrition, et la santé animale. Cent quarante-deux offres avec des conditions attractives d'accueil et de recrutement seront proposées sur quatre ans.

Coordonné par l'INRA et Agreenium, le programme AgreenSkills (2012-2016), est cofinancé par la Commission Européenne dans le cadre du Programme COFUND – Personnes du 7e Programme cadre de recherche et développement (PCRD).

Les objectifs d'AgreenSkills sont de favoriser la mobilité internationale des jeunes chercheurs, de 6 à 12 mois pour les séjours en dehors de la France, et de 12 à 24 mois pour les séjours entrants en France, en soutenant des projets de recherche à l'aide de financements très attractifs de la mobilité et de parcours personnalisés de développement de carrière.

Il s'adresse aux jeunes chercheurs titulaires d'un doctorat, avec moins de 10 ans d'expérience depuis l'obtention de leur Master, sans distinction de nationalité et d'origine. Le programme concerne tous les laboratoires de recherche des membres d'Agreenium.

L'appel à candidatures est lancé à partir du 15 mars 2012 en continu sur une période de 3 ans (2012, 2013, et 2014). La sélection sera réalisée selon un processus international deux fois par an.

AgreenSkills: a new international mobility programme for researchers

AgreenSkills is an international mobility programme offering young researchers of all nationalities incoming and outgoing fellowships in the fields of agriculture, environment, food and nutrition, and animal health. One hundred forty-two fellowships with attractive recruitment conditions will be offered over four years.

Coordinated by INRA (French National Institute for Agricultural Research) and Agreenium, the AgreenSkills programme (2012-2016) is co-funded by the European Commission in the framework of the COFUND - FP7 People Programme.

AgreenSkills sets out to encourage the international mobility of young researchers, from 6 to 12 months for outgoing fellows and from 12 to 24 months for fellows coming to France (the incoming fellows), by supporting research projects with very attractive mobility allowances and personalized support for career development plans.

It is aimed at talented young researchers from all over the world holding a PhD and having a maximum of ten years research experience after their Master's degree. The programme concerns all the research laboratories of Agreenium members.

The AgreenSkills programme is implemented through a continuous call for submission with two selection rounds per year. The continuous call will open on 15 March 2012 for 3 years (2012, 2013, and 2014)

Date of recruitment: October 2012

A second selection round for 2012 will be carried out in autumn, with an application deadline of 15 November 2012.

About Dr. Francois Forget's conference:

"Like the Earth, Mars is a world. A complex and vast world with a long history marked by multiple events. Little by little, this history is revealed by NASA and ESA spacecrafts sent to the red planet. Of course, their observations also raise many questions.

Why has Mars evolved differently than the Earth ? What do its river beds, deltas and glaciers tell us about its past ? Could life have existed there ? I will tell a few stories on the turns and adventures of the exploration of planet Mars and on the resulting scientific investigations."

Francois Forget

Dr. Francois Forget is Director of Research at the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), and the Head of the Solar System Department at the Institute Pierre Simon Laplace (IPSL- France), in the Laboratory of Dynamic Meteorology (LMD).

In 1992, after graduating with an engineering degree from the Grande Ecole ENSTA (National College for Advanced Technologies), he went across the Atlantic to join NASA's Ames Research Center as a CNES (French Space Agency) engineer, where he participated in the preparation of the French "Mars Balloon" project for the Mars 96 mission. Upon returning to France, he decided to become a scientist, received his PhD In 1996 from the University of Paris VI, and joined the CNRS in 1998. He went back to work for NASA in 2004 and 2005.

F. Forget's research is devoted to the exploration of planet Mars and the investigation of planetary atmospheres, combining numerical modeling and the analysis of space observations. He is strongly involved in space missions like Mars Express (ESA), and the upcoming Exomars program. He has also participated to the preparation of NASA's future exploration program as a member of the NASA/National Academy of Science "Planetary Science Decadal Survey".

In 2004, Dr. Francois Forget was awarded the "Best Popular Science Book 2004" ("Grand Prix") at the "Salon du livre scientifique d'Orsay" for the book "Planet Mars: Story of Another World" that was translated in Dutch, Japanese and English.

He also was granted the Foundation del Duca's award (Institut de France - Académie des Sciences), as well as the Zeldovich medal (Committee on Space Research - COSPAR) and the CNRS "Bronze medal''.

A propos de la conférence de Dr. Francois Forget

« Comme la Terre, Mars est un monde. Un monde vaste et complexe avec une longue histoire marquée par plusieurs événements. Peu à peu, cette histoire est révélée par les vaisseaux de la NASA et de l'ESA envoyés sur la planète rouge. Naturellement, leurs observations soulèvent beaucoup de questions.

Pourquoi son évolution a-t-elle suivi un chemin différent de celui de la Terre ? Que nous indiquent les lits de ses rivières, les deltas et les glaciers, sur son passé ? La vie aurait-elle pu exister là-bas ? Je vais raconter quelques histoires sur l'évolution et les aventures de l'exploration de la planète Mars et exposer les enquêtes scientifiques qui en résultent. »

Biographie de Francois Forget

François Forget est Directeur de Recherche au Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) et Responsable du Département du Système Solaire à l'Institut Pierre Simon Laplace (IPSL-France), au Laboratoire de Météorologie Dynamique (LMD).

En 1992, après avoir obtenu un diplôme d'ingénieur de l'Ecole Nationale des Techniques Avancées, il a rejoint le centre de recherche « Ames » de la NASA, en tant qu'ingénieur du CNES, où il a participé à la préparation du projet "Balloon Mars" pour la mission Mars de 1996. De retour en France, il a décidé de devenir chercheur et a obtenu, en 1996, son doctorat de l'Université de Paris VI. Il a rejoint le CNRS en 1998. Il retourna travailler pour la NASA en 2004 et 2005. Son domaine recherche est consacré à l'exploration de la planète Mars et à l'étude des atmosphères planétaires, combinant la modélisation numérique et l'analyse des observations spatiales. Il est fortement impliqué dans des missions spatiales comme Mars Express (ESA), et le programme Exomars.

En 2004, François Forget a reçu le Grand Prix au Salon du livre scientifique d'Orsay pour le livre "La planète Mars, histoire d'un autre monde » qui a été traduit en néerlandais, japonais et en anglais.

Il a également a reçu le prix de la Fondation del Duca (Institut de France - Académie des Sciences), ainsi que la médaille d'Zeldovich (Comité de la recherche spatiale - COSPAR) et la « Médaille de bronze'' du CNRS.

C'est une soirée un peu atypique à laquelle vous convie le Café des sciences de ce mois de mai 2012, avec un prestigieux intervenant, le Prof. Jacques Mistral, économiste, qui a enseigné pendant le semestre écoulé à la « Harvard Kennedy School ».

Nous aborderons un paradoxe de l'économie : comment se fait-il que des recherches très pointues et aussi largement enseignées, produisent autant de controverses et si peu de résultats dépourvus d'ambiguïté ? Jacques Mistral est actuellement professeur invité à la « Harvard Kennedy School » et directeur des études économiques à l'IFRI depuis septembre 2007. Auparavant, Jacques Mistral a effectué un parcours professionnel à la fois dans le monde universitaire, dans l'administration et dans le secteur privé. Il a notamment été conseiller économique du Premier Ministre, M. Michel Rocard (1988-1990) et conseiller spécial de M. Laurent Fabius, Ministre de l'Economie, des Finances et de l'Industrie (1998-2000).

Jacques Mistral a aussi exercé pendant plusieurs années des fonctions de direction dans un grand groupe financier privé, AXA (1990-1998). Il a eu une longue carrière universitaire en enseignant en particulier à l'ENSAE, à Sciences-Po Paris et à l'Ecole Polytechnique. Jacques Mistral est ancien élève de l'Ecole Polytechnique et docteur en sciences économiques et économie appliquée. Son dernier livre, « La troisième révolution américaine », a obtenu le prix du meilleur livre d'économie en décembre 2008. Il a récemment contribué à 2 rapports du Conseil d'analyse économique, l'un sur l'émergence de la Chine (mai 2011), l'autre sur la réforme du système monétaire international (été 2011).

This is a special event organized by the Café des Sciences for May 2012 with a prestigious speaker, Professor Jacques Mistral, an economist finishing a semester teaching at the Harvard Kennedy School.

We will address a paradox of economic science: how is it possible that such targeted research that is widely taught can produce so much controversy and so few unambiguous results? Today, this science is being questioned by economics students on both sides of the Atlantic: students at Harvard and the Ecole Normale in Paris have both questioned their universities in open letters. How much confidence should we have in this science? Are its teachings irrelevant? Jacques Mistral will draw on his economic experience in public administration and business to share his thoughts on this subject.

Jacques Mistral is currently a visiting professor at the Harvard Kennedy School and has been Head of Economic Research at IFRI (Institut Français des Relations Internationales) since September 2007. His previous professional experience has included work in higher education, public administration and the private sector. He was Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister, Michel Rocard (1988-1990) and Special Advisor to Laurent Fabius, Minister of the Economy, Finance and Industry (1998-2000).

Jacques Mistral also held executive positions in the large private financial group AXA (1990-1998). He has a long university teaching career, in particular, at ENSAE (Ecole Nationale de la Statistique et de l'Administration Economique), Sciences-Po Paris, and Ecole Polytechnique. Jacques Mistral is a former Ecole Polytechnique student and doctor of Economic Science & Applied Economics. His latest book, “La troisième révolution américaine” (“The Third American Revolution”) won Best Economics Book in France in December 2008. He recently wrote two reports for the Conseil d'analyse économique: Economic Consequences of Emerging China (May 2011) and Reform of the International Monetary System (summer 2011).

T-Cell

T-cells, also known as T lymphocytes, are a type of white blood cell that is of key importance to the immune system and is at the core of adaptive immunity, the system that tailors the body's immune response to specific pathogens. The abbreviation "T" stands for thymus, the organ in which their final stage of development occurs [1]. The T cells are like soldiers who search out and destroy the targeted invaders.

French research has been fruitful in immunology (the scientific study of the structure and function of the immune system).

In 1989, Marie-Paule Lefranc (Université Montpellier 2 and CNRS) created the IMGT, the international ImMunoGeneTics information system which became the international reference in immunogenetics and immunoinformatics. This system consists of 4 databases and provides a high-quality integrated knowledge resource, specialized in the immunoglobulins or antibodies, T cell receptors, major histocompatibility complex of human and other vertebrates and related proteins of the immune system [2].

More recently, Jules Hoffman, CNRS research director and professor at the University of Strasbourg was awarded the 2011 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine, jointly with Bruce A. Beutler, for their discoveries concerning the activation of innate immunity. Their findings have revolutionized current understanding of the immune system by disclosing the main keys to its activation. They share the prestigious award with Ralph M. Steinman for his works on dendritic cells and their role in adaptive immunity [3].
