The Office for Science and Technology and the Gérontopôle of the University Hospital Center in Toulouse will organize the 2015-2016 editions of the French American Biotechnology Symposium (FABS) with a focus on "Prevention and care for people living with Alzheimer’s disease”.
Since 2008, the Office for Science and Technology of the Embassy of France in the USA has organized the French American Biotechnology Symposium (FABS), a one- to two-day workshop in biotechnologies, centered on the research in these two countries and on organizing exchanges and collaborations between the two.
Following the call for proposals launched in early 2014 to co-organize the 2015-2016 editions of the FABS, the Office for Science and Technology at the Consulate general of France in Los Angeles selected as partners the Gérontopôle of Toulouse, the Cancer-Bio-Santé (Cancer-Bio-Health) competitiveness cluster, the economic development agency of Toulouse Metropole "Invest in Toulouse" and the So*Toulouse Convention Bureau.
The symposium will take place in Toulouse in December 2015, with a follow-up in the United States in 2016 (location to be defined). The 2015 edition of the FABS will be associated with the Nursing Homes Congress of the International Association of Geriatrics and Gerontology (IAGG) which will take place in Toulouse at the Hôtel-Dieu, on December 2-3, 2015. The FABS symposium will focus on the medicinal and non-medicinal care of people with Alzheimer’s disease at every stage (including at severe stages). The covered topics will include care for people with behavioral disorders, care structures and support at-home care, nursing homes for dependent elderly people and how new technologies can improve healthcare.
Physicians, caregivers, health care administrators, manufacturers, working either in France or in the US, will be brought together to discuss tomorrow’s structures, combining architectural innovations, new technologies and multidomain interventions. A similar discussion on care delivery systems for frail older persons and maintaining autonomy, and especially on adapting their living space (home but also residential homes) by integrating new technologies and multidomain interventions, will also be carried out.
The Gérontopôle of the University Hospital Center of Toulouse, directed by Professor Bruno Vellas, federates a number of research teams within a a single structure in order to dynamize research on longevity, to find better ways to prevent mental diseases causing dependence and to promote healthcare of elderly people. The Gérontopôle commits to aging issues research, prevention and healthcare, through various multidisciplinary, sanitation and socio-medical projects :
• clinical research and trials with innovative molecules,
• development of a policy to prevent dependence with the Institute of Aging Science (Institut des Sciences du Vieillissement) and based on epidemiological research and prevention trials,
• development of research on healthcare services in nursing homes for dependent elderly people.
Within this framework, the Gérontopôle initiated both French and European networks in Alzheimer’s disease. These networks gathers over 50 centers of excellence on Alzheimer’s disease.
Labeled in 2005, the Cancer-Bio-Santé (CBS) competitiveness cluster is one of the 7 French biotech clusters in health, specialized in cancer and aging research. Covering a wide range of fields from prevention to the development of new treatments, drugs and technologies, but also diagnosis, nutrition and patient follow-up at home, the cluster helps companies develop innovative products, in collaboration with research laboratories and healthcare centers. Moreover, the cluster is actively involved in the local Bio-Health sector and in the territorial economic development of Midi-Pyrénées and Limousin regions. Its priorities include the creation of an ecosystem favorable to the development of biotechnologies in the region (collaborative projects, technical platforms, provide financial support to firms and innovation, …) as well as promoting its members and this regional ecosystem on an international scale.
